Behind the Scenes Scoop with the Cast of Beauty and the Beast

Disney

I was thrilled to get the inside scoop for one of the hottest and most anticipated movie releases this year… As I walked into the Montage hotel in Beverly Hills for the Beauty and the Beast junket, I immediately felt as if I was in an enchanted fairytale. Disney

The event opened with composer Alan Menken, Josh Gad, and Luke Evans performing, “Gaston.” My eyes glistened and my inner child felt as if I was in the beloved fairytale.

Luke Evans (Gaston), Emma Watson (Belle), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Plummette), Dan Stevens (Beast), Josh Gad (Lefou),Audra McDonald (Garderobe),Bill Condon (Director), and Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken were all in attendance. Here’s few excerpts from the interview:

Disney

Emma Watson looked royally in her chic long dress.  Emma talked about her character Bell. She described her as a strong activist, and a role model she hoped other young girls would look up to. Belle was her idol growing up. She felt it was vital to make Belle different, unconventional, and unique. Emma is the ideal Bell in this wonderful remake.

“You know, it’s just a start. I mean, it’s really remarkable to play someone that I’m almost sure had an influence on the woman that I have become. I think the first time I saw Paige O’Hara sing Belle (Reprise), you know, it’s kind of the I want song of all I want songs. And I just immediately resonated with her. I mean, I was so young I didn’t even know what I was tapping into but here was something about that spirit, there was something about that energy that I just knew she was my champion.”

Disney

Josh Gad  talked about his unpleasant encounter with his on set horse. He said his horse walked backwards and was unpredictable.

Josh said, “Mine is a cold-blooded killer. And he proceeded to moonwalk, he walked backwards. (Laughs) Then, he ran through multiple extras in the village, ran around – I didn’t even know it was possible – but ran through these like pillars around, up and back again. I heard “cut” and I heard laughing, and the laughter was coming from the horse’s trainer, and he came up to me and he goes, “I’m so sorry. I’ve never seen this happen before.”

Luke Evans talked about the physicality of his role as “Gaston.” He said he trained hard to fit the role. His character development was extensive.

Evens said, “And I wanted the audience to – in away, I just thought, let’s make them like him a little bit first, so that when the cracks start to appear, which they do very subtly, even from the door slam, you know, there’s something inside of him that he’s like, I’m not used to this, this isn’t how it goes, you know, this is not what she’s supposed to be doing. And although he keeps believing that Belle will change her mind, that’s where the cracks appear in my thought process and then slowly, you know, the jealousy takes over, and who he becomes, especially Gaston as opposed to other Disney villains, he has no book of spells, he has no magic powers. He’s a human being, and he uses his status within that village to rouse a crowd and he does it all from just being himself, which is quite terrifying in a way. So I played on that, I played on the humanity of the character as much as he is larger than life.”

Dan Stevens said, “And getting to know Emma, first and foremost, on the dance floor was probably, you know, I think it’s a great way to get to know your costar, and I’m going to try and do with every movie I do now, whether there’s a waltz in the movie or not. (laughter) But no, I mean the trust that Emma had to place in me that I wouldn’t break her the title really, the “and the” bit, you know, and that’s sort of the essence of a waltz being two people in this whirlwind, you know, and learning about choreography really, the storytelling through dance, not just getting up and dancing but actually, you know, really – really telling a very crucial part of the story in that big turning point. So yes, lots of physicality.”

Gugu Mbatha-Raw talked about she worked hard on her French accent and how she embraced her inner child to portray   “Plumette,” the feather duster.

Director Bill Condon discussed the evolution of Disney and the movie translation to 2017. He talked about this movie being about “looking closer, digging deeper, and accepting people for who they are. In a very Disney way, we are including everybody.”

This was something that touched my heart.  We live in a time where many are outcasted. It’s wonderful to see that Disney is opening the doors to diversity.

Audra McDonald said,”Knowing not only did it  have this incredible creative team, but that Emma Watson was going to be Belle.  Emma has affected girls of my daughter’s age and my daughter is someone who now asks for people to donate money to charities for her birthday gifts instead of presents.  Knowing that Emma was going to make sure that Belle was somebody who was independent, strong,  educated, someone who was sticking up for girls and women, and someone who does all the rescuing in the film. That’s why I knew it was going to be important for me to be a part of and for my kids to see.” – Love her!

Disney

The event was magical! This movie teaches our children to “be themselves and to accept all,” something I rarely see in movies. Cheers to this progressive Disney film!

Dream Big: Engineering Our World Premieres February 17th

Dream Big: Engineering Our World Premieres February 17th

My family loves to spend time in museums. It is a place where we can let our imaginations and creativity run free. Museums ignite imagination, innovation, vision, and play. I often encourage my children to “Dream Big” and shoot for the stars. Last week we got a sneak peek of the new film, “DREAM BIG: Engineering Our World.” This film will hit select museums nationally and globally.

“DREAM BIG: Engineering Our World,” will premiere February 17th at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, and March 10th at the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, and the Fleet Science Center in San Diego, Ca .

This unique film celebrates human ingenuity behind engineering marvels big and small, and reveals the heart that drives engineers to create better lives for people globally. This film also inspires youth of diverse backgrounds to become innovators, educators, and leaders in their communities.

We also had the opportunity to interview Greg MacGillivray, director of the film and engineer Angelica Hernandez, who’s inspirational story is featured in the film.

We got a sneak peek of the film and we loved it!   I could not unglue my youngest son from the screen! The cinematography is remarkable.

Director Greg MacGillivray said, “For me, this story was the ultimate find for DREAM BIG. It’s a heartfelt story that echoes David vs. Goliath – where you have these very resourceful children from impoverished backgrounds and a then-unknown school taking on some of the richest and most sophisticated schools in the country, with surprising results. The Falcon Robotics Team had very little money and no reputation — but what they did have was a great mentor in teacher Fredi Lajvardi who really cared about them and their education. And what they also had was ingenuity and a willingness to persevere against the odds. They never gave up andthat is always the most inspirational of human qualities.”

DREAM-BIG

Angelica Hernandez,  is a Mexican immigrant turned leading Arizona engineer who got her start in the legendary robotics club at Carl Hayden High School. Angelica faced many challenges being both a girl and Latina. She has risen above it all to make big changes in our world every day.  Her story is truly heroic and inspirational.

“Angelica’s story is really the American story and in a sense, it could only have happened here,” muses Greg MacGillivray. “She came from a background where a lot of the time kids aren’t expected or even encouraged to go to college – in part because there’s such a big need for kids to get jobs and help the family out as soon as they finish high school. But Fredi told Angelica, you have to go to college, and she buckled down and made it happen. She became a shining example of the possibilities for anyone in this country to succeed if you work hard and dedicate yourself.”

Like many kids, Angelica had almost no clue of what an engineer does when she joined the robotics club at Carl Hayden. It wasn’t even on her mind. “First I joined ROTC and that’s when I started hearing more about the robotics team,” she remembers. “But really, I had no idea what they even did or what it was all about. When I finally joined, it turned out to be so much bigger and more exciting than what I thought it was.”

I was thrilled that my youngest daughter had a chance to interview Angelica. She’s a wonderful role model for young girls with “Big Dreams.”

This film is great for the entire family. You don’t want to miss it!

Sony Pictures Animation Unveils Upcoming Slate

Movies can move us in many ways. They can inspire us, motivate us, and encourage us. The Sony Pictures Animation team continues to create films that have a long-lasting impact, quickly becoming family favorites.

As a family, we love to watch movies together. Movie time is our special family bonding activity. I am always looking for uplifting, feel-good movies that have a good message.

Earlier this month, I was invited to Sony Pictures Animation Studios to get the behind-the-scenes scoop on the studio’s upcoming film projects for 2017. Sony also announced its highly anticipated future feature film projects, including one from Pulitzer Prize-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda.  Celebs Demi Lovato and Joe Manganiello made a special guest appearance.

According to Kristine Belson, President of Sony Pictures Animation, Sony is proud of the artist-driven titles coming up.  “The abundance, variety and quality of the features are a testament to the wealth of creative talents who call Sony Pictures Animation their home,” she said.

Thank you Sony Animation Pictures for inviting me to your event!

The Emoji Movie – August 4, 2017 release

Ok, you know that Emojis rule the world, or at least your phone… In this new upcoming film, Emojis come to life.

The Emoji Movie unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone.  Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone’s user.  In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (voiced by funnyman T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become “normal” like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer).  Together, they embark on an epic “app-venture” through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever.

Newly announced voice cast members include Jennifer Coolidge (Gene’s mother, Mary Meh), Maya Rudolph (Smiler), Jake T. Austin (Alex), and Sir Patrick Stewart (Poop).

The Star – November 10, 2017 release

The Star is poised to be the star of this holiday season, and I can’t wait to see this film with my entire family!

A small but brave donkey named Bo yearns for a life beyond his daily grind at the village mill.  One day he finds the courage to break free, and finally goes on the adventure of his dreams.  On his journey, he teams up with Ruth, a lovable sheep who has lost her flock and Dave, a dove with lofty aspirations.  Along with three wisecracking camels and some eccentric stable animals, Bo and his new friends follow the Star and become accidental heroes in the greatest story ever told – the first Christmas.

The voice cast will be led by Steven Yeun (Bo the donkey), Kelly Clarkson (Leah the horse), Aidy Bryant (Ruth the sheep), Keegan-Michael Key (Dave the dove), Kristin Chenoweth (Mouse), Anthony Anderson (Zach the goat), Gabriel Iglesias (Rufus the dog), Ving Rhames (Thaddeus the dog), Delilah Rene (Elizabeth), Kris Kristofferson (Old Donkey), Gina Rodriguez (Mary), Zachary Levi (Joseph), with Oprah Winfrey (Deborah), Tyler Perry (Cyrus) and Tracy Morgan (Felix) as the three camels, and Christopher Plummer (King Herod).

Hotel Transylvania 3 – September 21, 2018 release

My son loves the Hotel Transylvania movies and is ecstatic about this new film… He enjoys the dark humor and adventures these monsters embark upon. (Listening to his giggles while watching are the best!)

In Hotel Transylvania 3, Mavis surprises Dracula with a family voyage on a luxury Monster Cruise Ship so he can take a vacation from providing everyone else’s vacation at the hotel. The rest of Drac’s Pack cannot resist going along and once they leave port, romance zings Drac when he meets the mysterious ship captain Ericka.  Now it’s Mavis’ turn to play the overprotective parent, keeping her dad and Ericka apart. Little do they know that his “too good to be true” love interest is actually a descendent of Van Helsing, arch nemesis to Dracula and all monsters!

The voice ensemble of favorites returns, including Adam Sandler (Dracula), Selena Gomez (Mavis) and Andy Samberg (Johnny).

Untitled Animated Spider-man – December 21, 21, 2018 release

Are you a Spider-man fan? If so, start getting excited!

From Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the geniuses behind The Lego Movie, comes an animated Spider-man feature starring Miles Morales.

The details are hush-hush, but here’s what we know:

The feature is directed by Bob Persichetti (head of story on Puss in Boots and The Little Prince) and Peter Ramsey (Rise of the Guardians). The film is written by Phil Lord. Avi Arad (Iron Man, Spider-Man), Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: Homecoming), Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (Untitled Han Solo Movie) are executive producing; Christina Steinberg (Trollhunters) is producing.

Vivo – December 18, 2020 release

If you love a good musical, you don’t want to miss Vivo

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the award-winning (Emmy, Tony, Grammy, Olivier, Pulitzer Prize and MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient) creative force behind the groundbreaking Broadway musical Hamilton, writes new songs for this musical animated feature.  Academy Award nominated director Kirk De Micco (The Croods) is set to helm a script by Pulitzer Prize winner Quiara Alegría Hudes (In The Heights).  Academy Award nominated producer Laurence Mark (Dreamgirls, Julie & Julia) serves as executive producer, and Lisa Stewart (Almost Famous)
