Focus Feature’s DARKEST HOUR Is A Must-See

Last week, I boarded the historic Queen Mary in Long Beach for Focus Feature’s new film DARKEST HOUR. I attended a panel discussion with the film’s talent, a tour of the Winston Churchill exhibit, and a special reception with a cigar bar and whiskey tasting. This sensational film is a MUST-SEE and can be seen in select theaters in Los Angeles and New York, and everywhere December 22nd…

Congratulations to the DARKEST HOUR team on their recent four Critics Choice nominations for: Best Picture, Best Actor (Gary Oldman), Best Score, and Best Hair and Makeup!

Thank you Focus Features for inviting me to screen DARKEST HOUR and attend the press conference. All opinions are my own.

About DARKEST HOUR

During the early days of World War II, with the fall of France imminent, Britain faces its darkest hour as the threat of invasion looms.  As the seemingly unstoppable Nazi forces advance, and with the Allied army cornered on the beaches of Dunkirk, the fate of Western Europe hangs on the leadership of the newly-appointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman).  While maneuvering his political rivals, he must confront the ultimate choice: negotiate with Hitler and save the British people at a terrible cost or rally the nation and fight on against incredible odds.  Directed by Joe Wright, DARKEST HOUR is the dramatic and inspiring story of four weeks in 1940 during which Churchill’s courage to lead changed the course of world history.

This remarkable documentary gives history buffs and movie goers a look at the historic timeline, where Churchill executed crucial decisions to guide the British army.

darkest-hour-gary

Gary Oldman’s onscreen performance was exceptional. It was to no surprise, when Randolph Churchill marveled about Oldman’s resemblance to his great grandfather at the press conference.

Randolph looked at Oldman and said, “And then suddenly through the door… I didn’t recognize Gary at all. It was my great grandfather!  I promise you our family was completely dumbstruck, and your whole appearance, the mannerisms, how you captured my great grandfather.”

In real life Winston Churchill mumbled, was unpredictable, scatty, and was a bit hostile. Oldman no doubt nailed this role, and who better to confirm this but Churchill’s own relatives.

I was drawn to the cinematography while screening this incredible film. The cameras moved flawlessly through the walls, and brought clear focus to this era. The contrast of natural light and silhouettes were used to highlight different pivotal moments in the film, and the camera zoomed in when Churchill (Oldman) tapped his ring and was in deep thought. The ring worn by Oldman was a replica of Winton’s actual ring.

The set design and costumes were beautifully created and were historically dead on. Oldman’s suits were tailored and were exact replicas of Churchill’s attire.

At the reception, we smoked cigars and sampled whiskey in honor of Winston Churchill and the new film…. It was memorable, and I enjoyed it to the fullest!

The Queen Mary was the perfect venue for this celebration… The ocean breeze and harbor view was wonderful.

As you can see, Churchill loved good cigars and whiskey.

Review: Disney Pixar COCO

Earlier this month my son and I headed to Walt Disney Animation Studios in Los Angeles, California to screen Disney Pixar COCO. I am overjoyed about this new magical movie. Disney Pixar has created a timeless film, that is important and symbolic for the Latino community.

Thank you Disney Pixar for inviting me to screen COCO. All opinions are my own.

disney-pixar-coco

About Disney Pixar COCO

Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.

disney-pixar-coco

About  Dia De Los Muertos (Day Of The Dead)

Mexico is a place of rich culture, traditions, and artistic expression. The celebration of Dia De Los Muertos is a perfect example of this.

“Dia De Los Muertos” is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico. It includes the creation of private altars called ofrendas. These decorated altars honor the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these gifts.

COCO depicts the authentic sight and sounds of this beloved celebration.  The film also showcases traditional food, pueblo life, and music that fills the air during festivals like this one.

“As soon as we decided that we wanted to tell a story that takes place in Mexico, we immediately booked our first research trip,” says director Lee Unkrich. “Over the course of three years, we visited museums, markets, plazas, workshops, churches, haciendas and cemeteries throughout Mexico. Families welcomed us into their homes and taught us about the foods they enjoy, the music they listen to, their livelihoods and their traditions. Most importantly, we witnessed the importance they place on family.”

The story takes place in Santa Cecilia. It resembled many pueblitos that I have traveled to in and around Mexico.  There were so many little details that Disney Pixar included. There were rustic cobblestone roads,  street vendors, and stray dogs that roamed the streets.

Art director Bert Berry said, “We wanted to play up the beautiful patina of the older architecture. Our hope was to depict Santa Cecilia as an older charming city, and we used aged building materials such as chipping plaster, hand-painted tile and signage, and cobblestones to accentuate the history and appeal of the town.”

disney-pixar-coco

This film also showed the importance of familia in the Mexican culture. It is relatable, and the characters resembled my own tias, tios, and primos (aunts, uncles, and cousins).

There were many heartwarming and memorable moments that made me think of my loved ones that have past on. My son said,   “Mom I’m trying not to cry.” It was so sweet to see his reactions and how moved he was by the story.

Most importantly, I am thrilled that Disney has created a film that my son can identify with the characters and the community. In fact, I thought he looks a lot like Miguelito.

disney-pixar-coco

The music was delightful and entertaining..

I was elated when I noticed that Ernesto de la Cruz’s character looks so much like Pedro Infante, a famous musician and actor in Mexico.

According to film producer Anderson, the authenticity was important. Filmmakers wanted to ensure that the film’s music not only sounded genuine, but looked genuine, too. “We used footage of musicians as reference so that when Miguel strums his guitar, it looks right. We recruited a number of talented musicians from Mexico whose ability to pour their hearts into this music makes all the difference in the world.”

Disney definitely did their homework, and were so respectful to the traditions and the culture.

disney-pixar-coco

“Día de Muertos is like a big family reunion that spans the divide between the living and the dead,” says director Lee Unkrich. “But it isn’t about grieving; it’s a celebration. It’s about remembering those family members and loved ones who’ve passed, and keeping them close.”

This sensational film celebrates the beauty of life and death,  and gives moviegoers a glimpse into a rich culture and el sabor de Mexico. Go see it with your entire familia…

Disney Pixar COCO hits theaters November 22nd!

Disney Pixar COCO Encourages Social Change

Disney Pixar COCO will hit theaters November 22nd and my familia can’t wait!

Earlier this month, I made it out to the Disney Pixar COCO press conference in Beverly Hills, California to meet with the all star Latino cast. This important new film has brought up an important discussion in my family and also within the Latino community. This press conference was memorable, and will go down in the books as one of my favorites.

GRACIAS Disney Pixar for inviting me to the COCO Press Conference. All Opinions are my own.

Disney-Queenbeelatina

As a Latina and a mother, I am over the moon and grateful that Disney has created a film that accurately depicts my culture. This sensational film is tearing down walls and stereotypes and presents my culture in a positive light. This timeless film encourages social change, in a violent time where Latinos are portrayed negatively and inaccurately by politicians and media.

Hear what Alanna Ubach, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Edwards James Olmos had to say to Queen Bee Latina below…

Disney-COCO

Disney-Clarissa-COCO

Here’s what my correspondent Clarissa Camacho asked the COCO panelists at the press conference.

CLARISSA CAMACHO:

“Hi. I’m Clarissa with Queen Bee Latina. And I’d like to thank you, first of all, for really being symbolic for the Latino community. So for the youth of the Latino community, what message would you like to take away from the film?”

ALANNA UBACH (voice of “Mama Imelda):

“Well, I think it was very important for Pixar to make a movie like this, because what they did was, if anything, they painted such – I mean, they – they did so –beyond my expectations, obviously, to quote Gael. But they painted such an exquisite
portrait of the afterlife. And so you can only hope that – my son, who’s 12 weeks go –when he’s old enough to understand this movie, he can walk away saying, “Mama, I am not afraid of death. I’m not afraid of the afterlife.” What a beautiful world this would be if the afterlife was like this. Could you imagine? And also, that they really did pay such a respect to the one quality that Latin families, Latin American families have across, and hat is the importance of familia, and that is something that no presidents, or borders, or politics can ever break – that importance, the importance of familia.”
HOST: Um-hmm.”

Disney-Gael-Garcia

Gael Garcia Bernal is the voice of “Hector”

GAEL GARCIA BERNAL:

” Yeah, and so I have – I mean, I’ve been saying this a lot, but I really have to stress it over and over again, because – I mean, if I have to do a very personal dedication, this film is for the kids, the Latino kids growing in the United States, because in the official narrative, it’s been said that their parents, or grandparents, or great-grandparents are rapists, murderers, drug traffickers. And these kids are being born in a moment of huge, complete fear, and they have to fight against the lie, and it’s
very complicated to argument against the lie. You know? And this film, or this expression amongst – with many other forms of expression that happen day to day, you know – it’s gonna be, it’s gonna give kids a way to feel confident of where they come
from, of where their parents, great-grandparents, grandparents come from, to know that they come from a very sophisticated culture, and to know that they have the possibility to always have access to that hive, to that – you know, to that [PH] colmena of life, and that they can come up with new answers to what’s needed in life that we, as humanity, need right now. So it would be for them, it would be – I mean, this is my – you know, you asked about what, for Latino kids, no? Like, I think this would be the thing I would say, you know? I mean, this film opens up that discussion, and it is a beautiful reflection on death, and the celebration life. Yeah.”

Disney-Anthony-Gonzalez

Anthony Gonzalez is the voice of “Miguel”

Disney-Edward-James-Olmos

Edward James Olmos is the voice of “Chicharron”

HOST:

“Hmm, interesting. Mr. Edward James Olmos, you have a – it’s a brief role, but a significant one, because it sort of sets up some of the rules of the Land of the Dead, and a character that’s not necessarily in its best stage. What was that like for you to play that character?”

EDWARD JAMES OLMOS:

“It was – you know, when they invited me to come up, Lee, and Darla – and they had invited me to come up to Pixar. And they said that they were doing this film, and they wanted to inform me about it, and ask me my opinion about it.
And they were so incredibly respectful of the material that they were working with, that immediately, it transcended into understanding on my part. And when they asked me to play the role, I was privileged. I mean, this became a real honor, because it – that character is what the story is. I mean, every single person in the room that’s seen thatmovie understands very well that what it means is if you don’t remember your loved ones, they’re gone. If you don’t tell the stories of that loved one, they cease to exist. And it was that simple. And so when I ended up – they asked me to do it, I said, “Of course. It’d be my honor.” And so we went ahead and did it. But I didn’t read the script. They didn’t hand me the script.”

Have you seen 9JKL on Monday nights on CBS? If not you should!

CBS-9JKL-queenbeelatina

Earlier this month, I headed to CBS Studios in Los Angeles, California to get the behind the scenes scoop to the new hit TV show 9JKL. I had the opportunity to meet with the talented cast and the creators, to get an up close look at the new show that is buzzing on CBS Monday nights.

This show is heartwarming, hilarious, and a great show to watch to start off your week!

Thank you CBS Studios for inviting me on set to 9JKL. All opinions are my own.

CBS-9JKL-set

It was surreal to step foot on set to this show. It felt so much like a real home. Mark Feuerstein creator of the show, talked about how this set resembled his parent’s home and the details he incorporated to make this show come to life. Mark even placed real family photos of his family on set. He said he uses  “real life”  experiences to create these laugh out loud episodes.

Mark’s wife Dana Klein, is the co-creator of this brilliant show. Although she is behind the scenes, Mark mentioned she is a huge driving force behind this new sitcom.

CBS-9JKL-Mark

About 9JKL

Mark Feuerstein stars in 9JKL in a family comedy inspired by his real life. Josh Roberts is a new divorcé and actor between projects who moves home to New York to regroup, living in an apartment sandwiched between his doting, meddlesome parents on one side and his brother, sister-in-law and their new baby on the other. Josh’s well-intentioned mom, Judy, is so excited to have her beloved son home after his 12 years in Los Angeles that she bribes their doorman, Nick, to secretly call her every time Josh comes up the elevator so she can greet him in the hallway. Also thrilled is Josh’s larger-than-life father, Harry, an attorney with no personal boundaries who’s eager to help Josh land his next starring role using his Hollywood “connections.” Teasing Josh about his return home are his competitive brother, Andrew, a successful surgeon who, unlike Josh, doesn’t have a problem saying “no” to their interfering parents; Andrew’s Harvard-educated pediatrician wife, Eve; and 12-year-old neighbor Ian from 5A, who hangs out in the lobby. As Josh’s family literally comes at him from both sides, he realizes he desperately needs to establish some ground rules, because his loving family is always going to be right there for him. Always. Dana Klein, Mark Feuerstein, Aaron Kaplan, Wendi Trilling, Dana Honor and Pam Fryman are executive producers for Kapital Entertainment in association with CBS Television Studios. Fryman directed the pilot.

The restaurant had a lovely ambiance and was dimly lit. A live a piano player filled the air with romantic music. The restaurant was idyllic, and set the tone for a perfect date night.

The food and presentation was perfectly balanced and delicious….

Sony Pictures Animation Presents The Star Movie

The Star Movie has hit theaters with a holiday bang, and my family couldn’t be more thrilled about the new film!

My girls and I headed to the film’s premiere in Los Angeles California, to celebrate its debut. Numerous celebs and their families arrived on the “white” holiday carpet to show their support for this lovely film.

Thank you Sony for inviting me to The Star Movie Premiere. All opinions are my own.

Just in time for Christmas

In Sony Pictures Animation’s film The Star, a small but brave donkey named Bo yearns for a different life beyond his village mill. One day he finds the courage to break free. He embarks on the adventure of his dreams, and he teams up with Ruth, a loveable sheep who has lost her flock and Dave, a dove with lofty aspirations. Along with three wisecracking camels and some eccentric stable animals, Bo and his new friends follow the Star and become unlikely heroes in the greatest story ever told – the first Christmas.

This sweet Christmas story is presented from the animal’s perspective.

About Tango Buenos Aires- The Spirit of Argentina

Take a journey to this South American country through the passionate dance and music that embody The Spirit of Argentina. One of Argentina’s greatest cultural exports, Tango Buenos Aires is considered the most authentic tango ensemble performing today. The dancers dazzle with sensual moves and playful drama, while the musicians entice with melodies of romance and nostalgia. This program traces the evolution of tango through the classic musical compositions of Carlos Gardel, a central figure in the history of tango, and his collaborations with composer Astor Piazzolla.

The Spirit of Argentina showcases the breadth of styles and gamut of emotions that have made tango the cultural phenomenon that it is. “Crafted swirling, fast-paced tapestries of movement, laced with proud postures and sensual couplings” (The Washington Post)

These performances by Tango Buenos Aires are are part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles, taking place from September 2017 through January 2018 at more than 70 cultural institutions across Southern California.
