Battle Of The Sexes Movie Hits Select Theaters this Weekend and Everywhere September 29th

In a time where women were told to stay at home to be wives, mothers, and homemakers a feminist revolution began. One that would change history forever. Tennis star Billie Jean King decided to take on Bobby Rigs in a tennis match to prove that women can achieve anything they set their mind to, and be equal to men. “Battle Of The Sexes” hits select theaters today, and in celebration of this sensational film, I attended a movie inspired “Battle Of The Sexes” tennis clinic, the premiere, and press conference.

The tennis match between world number one Billie Jean King and ex-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs took place in 1973. This film gave me a glimpse into the life and struggles of this superstar athlete, that used her stardom for a greater cause. A cause that is still fought by women today.

Synopsis

In 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men’s-champ and hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the BATTLE OF THE SEXES and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time. It reached 90 million viewers around the world. As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. Bobby Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, wrestled with his gambling demons, at the expense of his family and wife Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue). Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis court, sparking discussions in bedrooms and boardrooms that continue to reverberate today.

I hit the tennis court for some training of my own, and met actress Elisabeth Shue who was cast as Pricilla, Bobby Riggs wife in the film. I was little rusty at first, but I was happy to get a swing in for the movie.

Check out actor Austin Stowell’s shenanigans on the tennis court. Austin stars Larry King, Billie Jean’s husband in the film. His sexy pose has a hilarious backstory, but you need to watch this film to find out what is is!

This film is both educational and inspiring…

I will definitely take my girls to see this film. They need to know they can conquer anything that comes their way. They can be the voice for the voiceless and change they wish to see.

It was a true honor to meet Billie Jean King at the premiere. I told her that I loved her story, and I appreciated the fact that she paved the path for many of us and future generations.

After learning more about Billie Jean King at the press conference, I have the utmost admiration, respect, and appreciation for this heroic woman.

Seasalt Woodfire Grill: Santa Maria Style Barbecue in Huntington Beach

Living in the Central Coast was a unique and a memorable experience… I have wonderful memories of taking my children on lovely hikes at Oso Flaco Lake, picnics at local wineries, and eating delicious Santa Maria barbecue. The food and wine is like no other, and continues to be a highlight in my memory book.

On weekends, my family loved driving up Broadway street in Santa Maria. Local churches and organizations would set up on the main road, to grill and fundraise for different causes. As we drove we could smell the amazing aroma of the barbecue pits grilling up tri-tip, linguisa, chicken, and other central coast favorites.

I recently heard about Seasalt Woodfire Grill in Huntington Beach, and I was thrilled to learn that I didn’t have to drive four hours up the coast to get some authentic, Santa Maria-Style barbecue. I was curious to know if this restaurant was the real deal, and let me tell you…. It is!

About Santa Maria Barbecue

Have you ever tried Santa Maria-style barbecue? If not, you MUST!

Santa Maria barbecue is unique and centered around beef tri-tip. It is usually seasoned with salt, black pepper, and garlic salt. It is grilled over coals of native coast live oak, and often referred to as “red oak” wood.

Pinquito Beans are also an important component of traditional central coast barbecue. They are a cross between small white beans and pinto beans. They grow well in the fertile soil, and in mild climate of the Santa Maria Valley.

The ambiance is casual, yet chic. I could feel the Pacific Ocean breeze as I entered the restaurant. Patio seating is available, and surrounds a large fire pit.

Memory: This reminded me of our lazy days at Porter Ranch, when we would sit around a large fire pit, barbecue, and let the kids run free.

Different seasoning are brought to the table to add a little flavor to the dishes. (if desired)

As you walk into the restaurant, there is a full service bar. The Farm Craft Rim libations added to the whole Central Coast foodie experience.

I sipped on this fresh Grilled Piña cocktail (tequila + pineapple +jalapeño). It was much like my personality, and was the perfect combination of sweet and spicy… Sooo good.

We started out with the Tri Tip Nachos with manchego cheese sauce, cowboy cavier and Santa Maria Beans. They were tasty and we devoured them in 2.5 seconds!

The Whole Grilled Cauliflower with manchego cheese fandue, was appetizing and melted in my mouth.

I tried the Tri-Tip, Ribs, and Linguisa… The rustic presentation was impressive and the portions were generous. The meats were tender, juicy, and delectable.

The 12 ounce Spencer is also a great option.

Dessert anyone?

You cannot leave without eating dessert. Omar’s OG Pudding is to die for, and the Scorched S’mores is a MUST TRY!

The flavors at Seasalt Woodfire Grill were authentic, exquisite and reminded me of the beautiful time we lived in the Central Coast. I can’t wait to go back with family and friends… Cheers!

How To Throw A Fabulous End Of Summer Party

Summertime has come to an end, and my kids are back to school. To celebrate the end of summer, I hosted a “End of Summer Party” for my girlfriends. I truly enjoy entertaining and creating memories with family and friends, and I have recently decided to incorporate fresh new elements into my blog. I will now include: party planning, tablescapes, recipes, and DIYs.

My talented friend and party planner Sandra Mendoza, and I collaborated on this simple yet beautiful party theme to share with you!

Choose A Theme

Find a theme that is unique and inspires you…

When life gives you lemons… Throw a party!

My party planner and I chose this bright and colorful citrus theme.

reflects who the celebration is for, and there are NO rules. Sometimes, the smallest or most

Plan Ahead

Don’t leave any planing to the last minute, that way you can spend time and enjoy your guests at your party.

Set The Mood

Decorate with fresh flowers, candles, and or homemade center pieces. I have learned that you
don’t need to spend a lot of money to create a special ambiance.

The decor was simple and chic, and it all came together beautifully. As you can see, we incorporated lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruit in our decor.

Warm Welcome

As your guests arrive, welcome them with a cocktail. This will help set the tone to your party.

We served this fresh Grapefruit Paloma Cocktail in mason jars, and garnished them with edible flowers.

Incorporate Small Details

Small party favors or little welcome gifts are always nice…

These mini limoncello bottles were available on ice for my guests.

The Menu

Keep the menu simple. You don’t want to fuss or make a mess in the kitchen! Who has time anyway?

My menu included:

Fresh Summer Salad with Mozzarella, Spinach, and Basil with 18 year aged balsamic vinegar
Rosemary Lemon Chicken (grilled on cedar plank outside)
Lemon Asparagus Orzo Salad

This colorful summer salad was crisp and fresh.

The weather was perfect for grilling, so I made this Cedar Plank Lemon Rosemary Chicken.

Dessert- Keep It Simple!

Go to the grocery store or bakery and purchase ice cream, cookies, pie or cake.

For dessert we served lemon, lime, orange citrus flavored sorbet. I added a lemon Meyer cookie and garnished it with some mint, and served it in a martini glass. It looked elegant and there was no baking involved. Score!

Set Up DIY Station

Set up a DIY station, beauty station, and or play games. You want your guests engage and have fun!

I set up a sugar body this DIY Body Scrub Station with instructions.

The girls whipped up their own sugar scrub by adding coconut oil, citrus shavings, lavender, and essential oils. I provided mason jars so that they can take them home.

The Inspiration- My Lemon Print Summer Dress

Let me introduce you to my talented party planner Sandra Mendoza…

“Hi, I’m Sandra. I am a full time returning student (eek), a part-time party planner (Fun!),
and an always friend of Angela’s (Woohoo). I have known Angela, for some time, but have only
recently worked with her in the fun filled, exhausting, but amazing party planning world. She
contacted me in May about helping with her daughter, Tori’s 21st birthday party. I was happy
and excited to help bring the Toga party extravaganza vision they had to light. While planning
the party, Angela and I discussed her blog and how she was ready to bring new fresh elements
and content to it. We discussed doing some parties and DIY’s together. You could feel how
excited we both were for the upcoming things we wanted to do together. The first thing would be
a lady’s end of summer dinner. Something, simple, fresh, relaxing, and nice to celebrate the end
of a season. As we sat there discussing, planning, and scheming away her youngest daughter
brought in a package that had arrived. (Who doesn’t love a little happy mail). Angela opened the
package and it was a dress she had ordered, an adorable, lemon printed, summer dress. I loved it,
and then it hit me; this was our end of the summer party theme. The lemon print was simple,
fresh, and relaxing. I told Angela, and she agreed this was a great idea. So, off we went to plan
the perfect end of summer dinner party.

you that feeling and you can make it your own perfect party! So, cheers to perfect parties, with
no rules, and inspiration that finds us in a million possible ways.”

My girlfriends and I relaxed, indulged, and enjoyed our special time together. It was fabulous, fun, and memorable. I hope I have inspired you to host your own soiree…

Urban Plates In Aliso Viejo: Food That Tastes Good and Feels Good

My foodie friends and I headed to Urban Plates in Aliso Viejo earlier this month. We all share a passion for good food, and we love to try out new places. We were excited about our visit to Urban Plates in Aliso Viejo, because we had taken a glimpse at the menu online, and we knew there were several options for our diverse palates.

As I walked into the restaurant it smelled heavenly…

Everything looked colorful, fresh, and appetizing. The options were endless. I was a little overwhelmed at first, but the attentive staff walked me through the menu selection.

Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options are also available.

I was craving a salad, and I made my way to the salad bar. It was prepared and tossed right in front of me.

This Antioxidant salad was fresh and crisp.. This UP salad had a lettuce blend, organic baby kale, cucumbers, celery, mint, pickled onions, raw walnuts, grapes, blue cheese, seasonal fruit, and a mint-lemongrass balsamic vinaigrette.

The Urban Pizzettes are hand-stretched and made with organic dough. You can choose from margherita, pepperoni & cheese, bbq chicken, and portobello & pesto. Soooo good!

My pescatarian friend raved about the Herbed Salmon Salad.

It has bibb lettuce, up lettuce blend, roasted and chilled salmon, organic tomatoes, sliced fennel, red bell peppers, garlic croutons, organic egg, green onions, and green goddess dressing.

I indulged, but I felt guilt free because the food was fresh and made with high quality ingredients. It was wholesome, delicious, and affordable.

UP is casual and family friendly. They offer awesome kid options to choose from such as pizza, grilled cheese, mac and cheese, and the urban kid plate that has the choice of grilled free range chicken or grilled steak & any hot or cold side and chargrilled focaccia.

Dessert anyone?

The bakery section at UP is incredible. The pastries and selection of baked goods includes a variety of made-from-scratch cookies, cupcakes, tarts, brownies, layer cakes, cheesecake, cream pies and much more!

My personal favorite was the Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzel Crunch Cupcake. This chocolate cupcake is topped with peanut butter frosting, peanut pretzel caramel crunch, chocolate and a ganache drizzle.

I love this place so much, I went two days in a row! On day two, I ordered the Caprese Sandwich and Tomato Soup. I’m sure I will be back with my family soon…

In 2018, Merlin Entertainment will make the single largest investment in a LEGOLAND Park with a new attraction that takes families aboard a real submarine. Once inside, guests will be submerged underwater and immersed in an ocean habitat. This is the first time LEGOLAND will bring guests underwater to see more than 2,000 real sea animals including stingrays and exotic sharks. As guests look for lost treasures on a sunken LEGO shipwreck, they will also see LEGO octopi, marine tropical fish, and LEGO scuba divers. Touchscreens at each porthole will allow guests the opportunity to help the LEGO minifigure dive team identify gems, pearls, LEGO gold coins and more. Home Again Movie Hits Theaters September 8th

Home Again hits theaters this Friday, September 8th. In celebration of the new film, I headed to the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills to a screen the new movie, and enjoy a lovely cocktail hour with actress Reese Witherspoon.

“Starting over is not for beginners.” Life can be unpredictable and complicated. Home Again is about taking chances in love, family, and friendship.

About The Film

In Home Again, Reese Witherspoon stars as Alice Kinney a woman who is recently separated from her husband (Michael Sheen). In this modern romantic comedy, Alice decides to start her life over by moving back to Los Angeles with her two young daughters. On her 40th birthday, Alice meets young aspiring filmmakers who happen to need to a place to live. Alice agrees to let the guys stay in her guest quarters temporarily, but the arrangement takes an unexpected turn of events.

I often laughed and cried during the screening. Alice is pulled in several directions and must make decisions that could change her life path. Alice’s unlikely new family and new romance comes to a crashing halt when her ex-husband shows up with suitcase in hand. This film is heartwarming and relatable.

Reese Witherspoon’s bright smile lit up the room when she arrived to the cocktail party. She is simply stunning in person.

I asked her what advice she had for working moms, and how to balance their lives and careers?

Reese said, “Well I think it’s really important that you always focus on the kids. But it’s important that the mom feels good, then the kids feel good. And I think that’s what this movie is about, making those choices in your life.”

Will Arnett plays the voice of Surly. He talked about how much his two boys, ages 6 and 8 loved the film. “Their reaction was so real and so organic, because it has to be or else they’re in trouble.” Will entertained us with his sharp wit and sarcasm.

Precious (Maya Rudolph) said,”I think that’s really the beauty of getting to do projects that you can share with your family. My kids get excited. Although my youngest who’s four, we were watching the movie together, she kept looking at me and checking me out. Then she would look a the dog, then she would look at me.” Her daughter said, “That’s you mom!” Chuckles….

Bobby Moynihan is the evil mayor of Oakton.

The cast members talked about the silliness and chaos of parenting. The moderator asked Bobby, “Are you taking notes?” He responded, ” Yes, I am trying to. I am getting very terrified as they speak.”

Jimmy (Gabriel Iglesias) aka “Fluffy” said, “Nos estan pagando mas dinero por eso hicieron un part two.” (They are paying us more money, that is why they made a part two). Stand up comedian, Iglesias never fails to get laughs from an audience.

There was never a dull moment during the press conference and we laughed hysterically the entire time.

This movie is great for the entire family. Go see The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature in theaters August 11th!

Theater Review: A Steady Rain at The John Kirby Studio in LA

The smash hit “A Steady Rain” by Keith Huff has been launched for a third run at John Kirby’s Studio in Los Angeles. This sensational play has sold out night after night, after stirring up a buzz in Hollywood.

Keith Huff’s incredible play is directed by premiere acting coach, John Kirby, the “Angel” of Hollywood. “A Steady Rain” took us on unexpected emotional ride, one that includes disfunction, betrayal, and turmoil.

Huff’s play gave us a an intimate look into the complicated lives of police officers, and the temptations that can afflict them.

Synopsis

Keith Huff’s, A Steady Rain is a gritty, darkly poetic duologue about two Chicago police officers whose inner need to serve and protect consumes them — and ultimately, rips them apart. RJ DeBard (The Commission, Remnant, God Shots) and Andy Hoff (Mad Men, NCIS, NCIS LA, Lethal Weapon,Justified, How I Met Your Mother, A Perfect Getaway) star as partners on the police force who share a lifelong friendship that is tested after terrible decisions are made. Chaos spins their lives and careers out of control.

Joey (Hoff) and Denny (DeBard) are lifelong friends and Chicago cops who reach a career stalemate. Joey lives in a simple apartment and has a drinking problem. Denny is married with two kids and dominates the dysfunctional friendship. His abusive tendencies, push the ones he love most emotionally to the edge.

When a domestic disturbance call takes a huge twisted turn, a severe lapse in judgement begins to unravel their trust and loyalty. Told entirely by the two characters, this story rips, seamlessly, between individual recounting and live action. It’s increasingly apparent, however, that the two sides of their story don’t add up.

The brotherhood and bond between these two lifetime friends is simply unbreakable…

Denny (DeBard) lives on the edge, patrols and maintains civilian peace, in the most “unethical” way. He transitions steadily and his conflicted character transcends. Denny is volatile, explosive, and unpredictable. His performance kept the audience captivated. His wide acting range was phenomenal.

Joey (Hoff) is straight laced and watches the turmoil unfold from the sidelines. He is sensible and poised, and what I would consider a “typical cop.” He is also deeply conflicted and battles his own inner demons. Hoff’s execution was brilliant and believable.

The direction by John Kirby and execution of this piece was exceptional…

Build-A-Raft- River-Put your skills to work while you design and build a LEGO raft before you proudly float downstream.
Orange Rush- A giant orange raft slides and spins four riders, rushing past the Water Park Tower on a giant orange half pipe!
Splash Out- Single riders zip along a curving blue slide and then “splash out” into a pool of water at the end! Any guesses how the slide got its name?
Splash Zoo- This interactive water play area features spray pads, fountains, a teeter totter and giant interactive DUPLO animals all geared specifically for guests ages 1 to 3. This is great for little ones!
Soaker Joker- It’s no joke! You’re gonna get soaked. Water cannons blast from every angle. And every few minutes, 350 gallons of water drops from the clock tower overhead.
