Mountain High is nestled right outside of Los Angeles in the heart of the San Gabriel Mountains. The drive up to the mountain was easy, and the scenic views were breathtaking…

On our drive up my son could not contain his excitement. He repeated, “Are we there yet?”

Mountain-high

Upon arrival, the friendly staff helped us with our rental gear and get fitted for our skis.

Skiing is new for me, and I enrolled in a beginner half-day lesson.  I felt a bit nervous, but my patient instructor Christina helped me through it. I had a few falls, but overall it was super fun!  I cant’ wait to return and get on the slopes again. I am determined to learn! Lol

Seasalt Woodfire Grill: Santa Maria Style Barbecue in Huntington Beach

santa-maria-seasalt-woodfire-grill

Living in the Central Coast was a unique and a memorable experience… I have wonderful memories of taking my children on lovely hikes at Oso Flaco Lake, picnics at local wineries, and eating delicious Santa Maria barbecue. The food and wine is like no other, and continues to be a highlight in my memory book.

On weekends, my family loved driving up Broadway street in Santa Maria. Local churches and organizations would set up on the main road, to grill and fundraise for different causes. As we drove we could smell the amazing aroma of the barbecue pits grilling up tri-tip, linguisa, chicken, and other central coast favorites.

I recently heard about Seasalt Woodfire Grill in Huntington Beach, and I was thrilled to learn that I didn’t have to drive four hours up the coast to get some authentic, Santa Maria-Style barbecue. I was curious to know if this restaurant was the real deal, and let me tell you…. It is!

Thank you Seasalt Woodfire Grill for letting me review your restaurant. All opinions are my own.

About Santa Maria Barbecue

Have you ever tried Santa Maria-style barbecue? If not, you MUST!

Santa Maria barbecue is unique and centered around beef tri-tip. It is usually seasoned with salt, black pepper, and garlic salt. It is grilled over coals of native coast live oak, and often referred to as “red oak” wood.

Pinquito Beans are also an important component of traditional central coast barbecue. They are a cross between small white beans and pinto beans. They grow well in the fertile soil, and in mild climate of the Santa Maria Valley.

The ambiance is casual, yet chic. I could feel the Pacific Ocean breeze as I entered the restaurant. Patio seating is available, and surrounds a large fire pit.

Memory: This reminded me of our lazy days at Porter Ranch, when we would sit around a large fire pit, barbecue, and let the kids run free.

santa-maria-seasalt

Different seasoning are brought to the table to add a little flavor to the dishes. (if desired)

Seasalt-Woodfire-cocktail

As you walk into the restaurant, there is a full service bar. The Farm Craft Rim libations added to the whole Central Coast foodie experience.

I sipped on this fresh Grilled Piña cocktail (tequila + pineapple +jalapeño). It was much like my personality, and was the perfect combination of sweet and spicy… Sooo good.

santa-maria-woodfire-grill

We started out with the Tri Tip Nachos with manchego cheese sauce, cowboy cavier and Santa Maria Beans. They were tasty and we devoured them in 2.5 seconds!

santa-maria-woodfire-oc

The Whole Grilled Cauliflower with manchego cheese fandue, was appetizing and melted in my mouth.

seasalt-woodfire-grill-santa-maria

I tried the Tri-Tip, Ribs, and Linguisa… The rustic presentation was impressive and the portions were generous. The meats were tender, juicy, and delectable.

The 12 ounce Spencer is also a great option.

santa-maria-woodfire-dessert

Dessert anyone?

You cannot leave without eating dessert. Omar’s OG Pudding is to die for, and the Scorched S’mores is a MUST TRY!

seasalt-woodfire-dessert

The flavors at Seasalt Woodfire Grill were authentic, exquisite and reminded me of the beautiful time we lived in the Central Coast. I can’t wait to go back with family and friends… Cheers!

6 Important Reasons To Go Camping With Your Kids

KOA

My fondest childhood memories were spent in Rosarito, B.C. Mexico. Every summer my family spent time at my grandparent’s humble home by the beach. We had no running water, and we slept in small rooms in their casita (small house). We were completely disconnected from television, our CalecoVision and Atari, and we didn’t mind. We were content with taking hikes and enjoying the splendid nature that surrounded us. We sang, “Vamos a La Playa,”  as we walked to the beach.

My tios (uncles) sang classic ballads in the evenings as we gathered around the porch. We stared at the stars in the sky, and let our imaginations run free.  We told “La Llorana” ghost stories as we sat by a fire.  Life was simple, but great.

These treasures are vivid in my memory book, and I want to share this unique experience with my kids. This is why I love camping!

Last month my family went to explore Ventura Ranch KOA Campground in Santa Paola, California. It was only a two and a half hour drive out of Orange County. We stayed in the Park Model RV.  It was so nice to get out of the city and relax.

The Deluxe Cabin had had 2 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms. It was the perfect spot for our weekend staycation. This cabin includes kitchen with utensils, dining area, and living room.

KOA

Here are 6 Important Reasons to Go Camping with your Family:

1. Camping bonds families.

Camping allows families to disconnect from the city hustle and bustle and spend quality time together. It’s so important to talk to kids and create a dialog between parents and children.

My family is always on the go. Between work, school, and activities, we rarely have time to talk. It was so nice to hear what was going in each of our kid’s daily lives.

KOA

2. Nature is therapeutic.

It’s important to disconnect and enjoy nature. Nature is calming, and research shows that being outdoors in nature significantly reduces stress. (parents benefit too) Kids and teens benefit from their experiences in nature more than any other population, particularly in the area of academic performance.

It’s not always easy to get my teenage daughter out of house. Clarissa said she loved spending Earth Day at Ventura Ranch KOA.

KOA

The fresh air and scenic views are incredible. This was our stunning view from the Deluxe 2 bedroom RV.

KOA

3. The outdoors inspires creativity.

When children disconnect from technology, they are required to use their imagination. When they explore outdoors, they are surrounded by amazing sights, smells, and sounds. This heightens all senses, which then stimulates creativity.

My 10 year old son felt inspired to take this photograph of a wild peacock that was roaming around in the campground. I loved hearing him tell creative creepy stories, while we sat around our campfire.

Ventura Ranch KOA offers awesome activities for families:

  • Bigfoot night adventure walk
  • Bigfoot Watering Hole
  • Nature Walk
  • Tie-dye T-shirts
  • Zip Line
  • Rock Climbing Tower

and much more…..

KOA

4. Nature is a powerful teacher.

Not all classrooms have four walls. Nature is a powerful teacher. There are so many things that kids can learn hands-on outdoors, that they cannot learn sitting in a classroom. Playing outdoors also enhances problem-solving ability, and self-discipline, and cognitive flexibility in children.

My family talked talked about wildlife conservation as we walked on the nature trail. We named different plants and animals that we spotted in the area. We saw hummingbirds, wild peacocks, squirrels, and even encountered a skunk. Yikes! My son also enjoyed learning about the Chumash indians that once resided in this area.

Andrew was thrilled to try on retired Park Ranger, Richard Roja’s from Latino Outdoors official hat.

KOA

5. Camping gets the kids outdoors and exercising!

Hiking, rock climbing, and swimming is great exercise. All of these activities will get the heart rate up and blood flowing.

My son broke a sweat when he climbed on this rock tower at the campground.

KOA

6.  Camping inspires kids to be adventurous!

When kids are outdoors they begin to explore, build confidence, and try new things.

It was so nice to see my daughter off her cell phone and hit the Zip Line for her first time. She was a little nervous at first, then in no time she was boarding a higher zip line. I loved watching her get out of her comfort zone and try something new!

KOA

I felt rejuvenated and re-energized after this trip…

We had a fabulous time at the Ventura Ranch KOA Campground in our GoRVing cabin. I  look forward to more family travel and exploration with them!

Thank you GoRving and KOA for hosting my family at the Ventura Ranch KOA Campground.  All opinions and adventures are my own.

New Northagate Market Opens In La Habra

Northgate

I grew up shopping at Northgate Market, and I have watched the store evolve over that last couple of years. Some of my fondest childhood memories include going to the mercado (grocery store) with my mama on Sunday morning, to pick up the ingredients for our family meal.  Northgate Gonzalez Market’s opened its newest flagship store in the City of La Habra. Let me tell you, these new stores keep getting bigger and better…

My mom’s kitchen always smells heavenly… Food is very important to my family. Our large gatherings are always centered around good food. Much like Northgate Market, our family recipes have evolved. My Papa makes yummy nopalitos (cactus), my sister Yolanda makes a great Lasagna, and my brother Ernie makes incredible fried noodles. Our family’s cuisine has become somewhat international.

It’s impossible to please everyone and my kiddos are also picky eaters.  I used to shop at five different markets to get what I need, but now I don’t have to. The new Northgate Market in La Habra is GINORMOUS and has everything I need, including international products!

Please note that this is a sponsored post. Thank you Gigasavvy for inviting to the grand opening of the Northgate Market in La Habra. Rest assured, that all opinions and gushing enthusiasm are my own.

Northgate

At the Grand Opening, customers stood in line since 4:30am to get a glimpse of the new store. It was awesome to see the customers dance to  “El Mariachi Loco.”

Northgate

I made my first stop at “La Barra” to get my coffee fix. (One of my favorite things to do)  Aguas frescas, teas, and fresh juices are also served at the bar.

Northgate

You can also get wheat grass shots here…

Northgate

The produce is so fresh and organic products are available…

Northgate

This is new!

I made my way to check out the new “Dulceria” (candy shop). The spicy tamarindo reminded me of my abuelo’s  little candy store in Mexico.

NorthgateThe variety meats and mariscos (seafood) is colorful and fresh. They also have grass fed meats.

Northgate

The ceviche bar had an array of delicious options (at least 10)  Why cook it all from scratch, when you can count on the freshest ingredients and high quality food at Northgate Markets?

Northgate

Don’t want to clean up?  If you are planning to visit the new Northgate Market, you can relax and enjoy authentic hispanic food.  You will find a fresh salad bar, pupusería, menudo, posole, fresh tortillas, and so much more! ( I love this)

Northgate

Wait they have sushi too?!  I think I won the lotto…. I found two sushi chefs preparing some fresh sushi. I was stunned.

Northgate

I love the warm Conchas ( in the picture shown above) from the panaderia (bakery) in the morning.  The bakery is loaded with my favorite carbs. (includes more than 100 new artisan breads, cakes, and cookies made fresh daily)

Northgate

It’s comforting to know I can find my traditional Mexican products at Northgate Market, but it’s also exciting to see all the new food trends there too!

The new super-sized Northgate Market in La Habra is my favorite store to visit and shop at because they have everything I am looking for and then some!  I also frequently visit the Northgate Market on 17th St, in Santa Ana and the Northgate Market on Lincoln in Anaheim.

The Full Churrasco Experience at Fogo De Chão

Fogo

Brazil is known for their dreamy beaches, warm people, and amazing cuisine.  This is why it is so easy to fall in love with the culture. Much like the Brazilians, my family loves to surround themselves with good food and good conversation.

This month my family dined at Fogo De Chão to try a full “Churrasco Experience.” A churrascaria is a restaurant that serves grilled meat, and offers as much as one can eat. The waiters move around the restaurant with the skewers, slicing meat onto the guest’s plate. This serving style is called espeto corrido or rodízio.  This is popular in Brazil.

Thank you Fogo De Chão for inviting me to try your Brazilian Cuisine. All opinions are my own.

CAUTION: The following images may cause drooling.

Fogo

The fresh Market Bar showcased a colorful variety of food choices such as: crisp salads, fruit, cheese, smoked salmon, meats, and much more….

Everything was so fresh and delicious… The restaurant is located  in the heart of Beverly Hills, California. This spot offers an incredible city vibe that cannot be beat.. In particular, I enjoyed the selection of cheeses. Who wouldn’t love delicious small plates, while sipping on a Brazilian crafted cocktail like the Fogo Premium Caipirinha? (Fogo Premium Aged Cachaça fresh muddled limes, cane sugar)

Fogo

The salads are fresh and seasonal.

Fogo

The choices were endless and there is a little something for everyone.

How To Go Fogo

Each guest’s plate is a creation of his or her own, so feel free to mix your favorite meats, sides and selections from the Market Table as you wish. There’s no wrong way to enjoy Brazilian cuisine.

Fogo

Seafood options are available for my pescatarian friends…. This Mango Chilean Sea Bass was served with fresh homemade mango relish, and malagueta pepper sauce, atop delicious asparagus spears.

Brazilians love food and it shows. The choices on the menu at Fogo De Chão will make you forget that you are in the U.S.

Fogo

Fogp

The meats were seasoned just right and cooked to perfection…

Fofo

My picky eater was happy to sink his teeth into this delicious chicken. There are so many options that make Fogo De Chão the   perfect spot for big families. They offer many packages and deals to choose from.

Fogo

After you eat as much as your heart desires, make room for the Caramelized Pineapple dessert. This warm pineapple is caramelized with a sugar coating, served à la mode, and drizzled with caramel.

Fogo De Chão made us feel like royalty and like family at the same time. If you want a taste of Brazilian heaven, you need to eat here….

The Cirque Magique Giveaway: Family 4 Pack

Cirque

When I was a kid, I always looked forward to seeing the circus when it was in town. I remember my pops would purchase tickets for my entire family. It was a treat, and after all these years these special moments are embedded in my memory book.

I also look forward to creating memories with my family…With that being said, last week I took my family to see “The Cirque Magique” in Buena Park, California.  It is not easy to find venues that my entire family can enjoy. So I was thrilled to take them to see this show.

Thank you Cirque Magique for inviting our family to see your show. All opinions are my own.

About the Tet Celebration
Tet Nguyen Dan (Tet), is considered the biggest and most popular festival of the year in Vietnam. It is celebrated on the first day of the first month in Lunar Calendar. Tet’s celebration is the longest holiday which may last up to seven days. It is the occasion for Vietnamese to express their respect and remembrance for their ancestors as well as welcoming the New Year with their beloved family members. Historically, Tet was important as it provided one of few long breaks during the agricultural year, which was held between the harvesting of the crops and the sowing of the next ones.  Most families gather to prepare a big feast, decorate Tet trees, and eat Tet food to welcome in the new year.
