This hilarious film is narrated by Ed Helms; who tells the coming of age story of an Adèlie penguin, who follows his fellow males in the icy Antarctic spring on a quest to build a suitable nest, find a life partner and start a family. However, unlike the other penguins in his breed, nothing comes naturally to him. Steve battles the extreme conditions in the arctic, and an abundance of predators. Disney Nature has touched our hearts again, and made me fall in love with this beautiful story.

The Adélie penguin is classified as near threatened on the IUCN Red List of threatened species.

In my interview with Director Roy Conli, he explained how much character and personality the Adélie Penguins had. They were very animated with their movements, and practically wrote their own stories.

The cinematography and scenic landscapes in this film were breathtaking!

Missing Link Movie: Interview with Chris Butler, Zoe Saldana, and Zack Galifianakis

Spring is here and a lot is happening in the movie world, including the release of Missing Link April 12th!

Missing Link is an extraordinary film that has several wonderful messages. It talks about the the power of friendship, accepting others for who they are, and most importantly, putting others before yourself.

Last month, I screened this film and interviewed Director Chris Butler, Zoe Saldana, and Zach Galifianakis at the Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. Check out the excerpts from my interview below!

The movie is funny, heart-warming, and full of adventure! It is based in America back in the late 1800’s.

Synopsis:

 Link is 8 feet tall, 630 lbs, and covered in fur, but don’t let his appearance fool you… he is funny, sweet, and adorably literal, making him the world’s most lovable legend at the heart ofMissing Link, the globe-trotting family comedy adventure from LAIKA. Tired of living a solitary life in the Pacific Northwest, Mr. Link recruits fearless explorer Sir Lionel Frost to guide him on a journey to find his long-lost relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La. Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight, our fearless trio of explorers encounter more than their fair share of peril as they travel to the far reaches of the world to help their new friend. Through it all, the three learn that sometimes you can find a family in the places you least expect.

I was most excited when the story led us to my hometown-Santa Ana, California. I mean, how awesome is that?!

I was curious about what inspired Director, Chris Butler, to choose my little city and put it in the film.

Victoria: —I actually had a question about one of the cities that you used, Santa Ana, California. I’m just curious, what made you choose that city? Only because I’m from there, so thank you for using that city. I feel like a lot of people forget about that part of Orange County.

Chris Butler: I think when you’re playing, or when you’re telling a story that takes place in the real world, even if it’s a different time period. You want to– people have certain expectations and they kind of hook what’s familiar– they hook into what’s familiar to them. So for example, if you’re gonna set part of the story in Victorian London, you need horse-drawn carts and chimney stacks, and so you have to check those boxes. And also, we’re traveling around the world pretty rapidly. So I don’t have much time to create a scene before we move on again. So I wanted things that look iconic, and you know, there’s not much that’s more iconic to the Victorian times than the old locomotive, and we all wanted a train station. And I saw some old photographs of Santa Ana train station in the 1880s and it’s just this glorious building, and so that’s what we based the design on.

Victoria: Yes, no, I thought it was awesome that you even added the water tower–

Chris Butler: –Yes–.

Victoria: –-Cause I pass by it every day so it–

Zoe Saldana: —Aw, that’s great.

I was very impressed with how Chris did his research, and how he included many little details that really made this film come to life. He even added the Santa Ana water tower!

This movie definitely one of my favorites. It’s a feel good movie that made me feel all warm and fuzzy after watching it. It is a MUST-SEE film for all ages!

Mercury Insurance Drive Safe Challenge

My teenage daughter is ready to hit the road but as a mom, I’m concerned she doesn’t know how dangerous driving can be. Thanks to Mercury Insurance’s #DriveSafechallenge I think my daughter will be much more prepared when she gets her driver’s license.

Last week at the Honda Center of Anaheim, teens were put to the test in different driving scenarios. Mercury insurance created an obstacle course that put them in dangerous driving situations. While driving with instructors, they were distracted with phone calls, texts, and talking to friends. They also learned how to take control of the car while skidding, and learned how to make sharp turns in an emergency. These were all very valuable lessons, and parents learned too!

Here are some important facts teens and parents should know before your kid gets behind the wheel.

  • Teenagers raise their risk for an accident by every increment they go over the speed limit. So yes, the speed limit is extremely important. In order to prevent collisions, your teen should cautiously maintain the designated speed ALWAYS.
  • Statistics show 16-17 year olds are more at risk for a deadly collision with each additional passenger. Your child should definitely not be driving with minors in the car 6 months after they’re licensed (it is illegal, and just extremely dangerous!)
  • 16 year olds have higher crash rates then any other other range. Now this is just natural – as teenagers are more inexperienced when it comes to driving. We should encourage our teens to drive distraction free, and have consequences for reckless driving.
  • 44% of teens said they would definitely speak up if someone were driving in a way that scared them. Parents need to teach their kids to speak up, because an accident isn’t worth being nice.
  • Teen drivers with involved parents are twice as likely to wear seat belts. Teens need to be responsible even when their parents are not in the vehicle.
  • More than 40% of teen of deaths occur when driving between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • Talking on a cell phone can double the likelihood of an accident as well as slow a young driver’s reaction time down to that of a 70-year-old elderly person. (Scary but true)
  • 1 in 5 of 16-year-old new drivers has an accident within their first year of driving.
  • 6% of teenagers rely on their parents to learn how to drive. So parents teach the well!

After this challenge, my daughter and I talked about all the possible obstacles and challenges she may face as a new driver. Driving is a privilege, and it’s important to open the line of communication with your teen drivers and set the expectations upfront.

Movie Review: Dumbo Now in Theaters

It’s been decades since the world first saw an elephant fly, and Disney’s 2019 live-action DUMBO extends the magic and splendor of the studio’s original masterpiece.

The studio’s decision to remake this beloved classic is no doubt controversial, however, the world is different from when the animated film released in 1941. Today, Disney recognizes that the success of this live-action remake needs balance between nostalgia and something fresh. The challenge was accepted by Disney animator-turned-director Tim Burton.

Dumbo is Burton’s fifth film directed for Disney. In 2010, he ushered in a new wave of Disney remakes with the live-action Alice in Wonderland. Film critics and fans alike know the whimsy and creative curiosity explored in this director’s breadth of work–Dumbo is an extension of that bold sentimentality, from the vivid visuals to the signature world created by composer Danny Elfman. Dumbo is the 17th feature film collaboration between Burton and Elfman.

Ehren Kruger’s script is a nod to what is familiar about the Dumbo storyline, yet pleases audiences with a different look at Dumbo the performer. If you ever wanted to know how Dumbo practiced at dress rehearsal and how he processed feelings of self-doubt, this script beautifully introduces a deeper look at the world’s most adored elephant. Coupled with gorgeous computer-generated imagery, this Dumbo character displays a innocence that feels true and heartwarming.

The cast of Dumbo contributes a fundamental element to this film that is missing from the animated version–the deep connection between mankind and animals. The live-action film centers on the Farrier family (Colin Farrell as father Holt) as they lovingly care for the new addition to the Medici Brothers Circus (Danny DeVito as ringleader/owner/jack-of-all-trades Max Medici). The Medici Circus includes all the classic, small-town performer personalities, yet also introduces them as a family facing tough decisions amid a changing American entertainment industry. When tycoon V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton) crosses paths with the circus, Dumbo is given a new opportunity at an accelerated career and potential new family of entertainers, including the charming aerialist Colette Marchant (Eva Green).

For those that welcome the idea that a remake of a Disney classic can result in a familiar yet elaborated takeaway, Dumbo resonates with the powerful feeling of belonging. Dumbo’s families, both elephant and circus, face heart-wrenching conflicts, and comfort exists in knowing there is someone accepting of and invested in his happiness. The feeling of belonging is essential to feeling complete, happy, and fulfilled; the same can be said for all the animals in our lives, including an elephant with larger-than-life ears and larger-than-life heart.

Disney’s Dumbo is in theaters nationwide on March 29.

Wonder Park Celebs Hit the Red Carpet: Movie Now in Theaters

Miss Clarissa hit the red carpet for the new Wonder Park movie at the Regency Village in Los Angeles, to interview the cast of of the new film.

Growing up is difficult, and as we get older our creativity and imagination can be impaired. It so important to have fun, and never give up! Wonder Park will take audience on a magical ride full of adventure, fun, and laughs! This film is “a celebration of imagination” that “dreams big, and delivers bigger!”

Me, “who’s going to drive? Melodi , “Can I drive first?” Me, ” Ok…” (with a sigh and little hesitation) Deep down I wanted to drive the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon first! Lol This Jeep Wrangler was our transportation for our girl trip to Idyllwild, California thanks to Orange Coast Auto. I seriously could not wait to drive this car!

We packed our cooler, bags, and we were off. Everything fit perfectly, and we had the option to put the back seat down, if we needed more room.

“Ok my turn!” Midway up, I happily took over the wheel. My legs are short, but it was super easy to adjust my seat. After I lifted my seat, I had a full panoramic view of the road and I LOVED it. On several occasions, we stopped to take pictures. The drive up to Idyllwild was lovely.

This Jeep Wrangler Rubicon was seriously so much fun to drive! Our weekend adventure was EPIC, and this INCREDIBLE car made it more memorable. This is definitely something I would LOVE to purchase in the near future.
